Chemical Safety Data Sheets (SDS) & eSDS Services
At Pharma Wizard, we offer expert services in the creation and management of Chemical Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and Extended Safety Data Sheets (eSDS) for strict adherence to regional regulations. We assist our clients by providing them with GHS-compliant SDS and MSDS documentations.
Chemical Safety Data Sheet - Overview
The Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) regulations play a major role in the way businesses conduct themselves globally.
Under REACH, there were new obligations concerning the exchange of information about the safe handling of chemicals and mixtures along the supply chain. The Safety Data Sheet (SDS) and Extended Safety Data Sheet (eSDS) became critical means through which safety information could be conveyed, addressing important areas like trade, storage, accidents, hazard classification, and waste management.
For an eSDS of a substance provided to a formulator, the exposure scenarios will always be provided whenever there is the need for exposure assessment in relation to registration. It is upon the formulator to confirm if the uses envisaged by their customers have been covered by the exposure scenarios.
Where there is no coverage of particular uses involving mixtures, more actions are needed by the formulators. In such cases, the SDS will be supplemented with exposure scenarios, whereby the use operations and risk management measures will be clearly stated for all purposes.
In order to know which information should be gathered, the industry has made two methods possible through collaboration:
- Bottom-Up Method/Information on the Safe Use of Mixtures (SUMI): In this method, one begins from the users who form the lowest part of the chain. It is a qualitative technique designed for passing information about the safe use of the mixture and precautionary measures that should be taken.
- Top-Down Approach/LCID (Lead Component Identification): This is a quantitative approach that uses information supplied from the supplier at the top of the supply chain. If there is no SUMI approach, then LCID method is employed to identify the components making up the largest proportion of the hazard in the mixture.
It is very important to ensure that information can be communicated effectively in line with the REACH Regulation since changes will have to be made to the SDS. Companies should reconsider how to manage the information and annexes from their respective suppliers. Flexibility still exists although compliance measures will remain in place. Pharma Wizard offers specific services to create eSDS for hazardous substances and mixtures.

Frequently Asked Questions:
1. Explain the term 'Chemical Safety Data Sheet' (SDS)?
Safety Data Sheet (SDS) is a legally compliant form of document that offers comprehensive details about the safety issues related to the chemical including how to store and handle it safely.
2. Distinguish between an SDS and an eSDS.
The former offers basic safety details related to the chemical while the latter provides additional exposure details and risk management measures according to REACH regulations.
3. Why is GHS compliant SDS important?
GHS compliant SDS provides hazard communication in a standardized format that enables organizations to fulfill international compliance requirements, while ensuring safety at the workplace along with chemical management.
4. What is the requirement for updating a Safety Data Sheet?
A Safety Data Sheet should be updated whenever new hazards associated with the product come into light or changes in regulatory guidelines take place.
5. What services does Pharma Wizard provide regarding SDS/eSDS authoring and chemical safety?
Pharma Wizard offers its expertise in the field of SDS/eSDS authoring, hazard classification of chemicals, exposure scenarios, documentation and compliance with international guidelines on chemical safety, including REACH, GHS, and CLP.
